Stories of Survivors

My start to photojournalism

For my Personal Project class, I decided to embark on my first photojournalism project. Both of my parents fled the Sri Lankan War, however, in the media, there is not much coverage of the event. During the war, the Sri Lankan government committed war crimes against the Tamil population in a secret genocide. Since there isn’t much mainstream media attention, I wanted to use my small platform to elevate survivor’s stories from the war. In 2018, I interviewed and photographed over 20 survivors of the Sri Lankan War and the Tamil Genocide. Many of the stories I heard were horrific - survivors told stories of their school being bombed, being beaten by the Sri Lankan army, and their home being looted. This is not my best work - by far. I was still learning how to operate my camera's manual mode and how to write interview questions. However, this project inspired me to pursue photojournalism. Through hearing their stories, I realized the power journalism has. My pen and camera allowed me to share the pain of millions of victims that never got to tell their story.
