MIPA makes journalists

Summer 2019
Before I joined the newspaper, I went to MIPA camp. In Ms. Cami Hall's Writing and Packaging the News Class, I learned the basics of InDesign and writing. At the end of camp, I was awarded an Excellence Award for my work that week!

Summer 2020
For 2020, I took the 'The Bobby Hawthrone Experience.' The class was very challenging - Bobby and Lori were both tough graders. Bobby even once used my work to show what not to do! However, in those two weeks, my writing changed so much. I was able to write with more emotion and clarity. It was the best writing class I have ever taken.

MIPA All-State Cohort
I have been a part of the MIPA All-State Cohort since early last year. The advisors and students are so nice and supported. And, the cohort meetings have given me great ideas that I have brought back to my publication. I truly love being a part of a greater community and connecting with journalists all across Michigan.

2019 Conference
In 2019, I attended the JEA/NSPA conference in DC with a small group from my newspaper class. Through the conference, I was able to participate in a full-day Photography Workshop with Mike Simmons. Additionally, I attended many lectures about various journalism areas, such as lead writing, infographics, and student journalist's rights.

2020 Conference
Even though the 2020 conference was virtual, a large group of editors still was able to go. At the conference, I mainly focused on attending seminars covering how to pursue journalism in college and internships. This conference was particularly memorable because I was awarded two individual awards and our publication got 8th in Best of Show!
Our 8th and 10th place win for both our website and in-print.
