Photo stories
Girl in the garage
Awards: Silver Key - Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, 2nd Place Feature Photo - MIPA
For our special car issue of The Emery, I shot a photo story on the only female mechanic in our town. I shot a photostory and wrote a feature article about her experience.
My favorite photo is one of her hands. From the beginning of our interview, I noticed her nails. From simply looking at them, I got a sense of her strong dedication and grit. She was kind enough to allow me to take a picture of them after she gave me a tour of the garage. Although it doesn’t show her face, the photo perfectly summarized her passion.
A trip to wonderland
This is the first photo story I did for The Emery - I spend 3 hours trying to capture the entire story of the play: the cast getting ready, the stage crew moving props and the star saying her monologue. In terms of technique, I really pushed myself to work with the lights - whether it be in the dressing room or on stage. By adjusting the exposure, I was able to let the lighting carry the tone of each photograph.
Art Night
I did a joint photo story with Mishal Charania. However, the photos above are the ones that I took. It was hard to work the yellow/fluorescent lighting of the school. I was able to fix the yellow undertones in editing. Overall, I tried to seek photos of the people, not the art. The photos were very successful and captured a range of emotions and students - we were able to combine our photo stories for pieces on the website and in print.
Detriot 2.0
In the summer of 2018, as apart of my CCS’s photojournalism camp, I created a 40+ photo story capturing the ‘New Detroit’. As a new photographer, I was very scared of street photography. It made me uncomfortable to go up to strangers on the street and take their pictures. However, through this camp, I was able to build my confidence as a photojournalist. Not only did I take pictures of strangers, but I also had 30-minute conversations with them. After this camp, I began pursuing street photography more - I have taken photos in many major cities such as Atlanta, Toronto, Chicago.
